Coming Home to a Favorite: Ethiopia Bedhatu Jibicho

It’s been fun and exciting to play with our offerings and shake things up, but it's always comforting to return to what we know and love. Words can’t express just how at home we felt when we tasted the first roast of Bedhatu Jibicho’s 2020 harvest. We know her coffee very well because we buy it year after year. This coffee consistently brings notes of black tea, bright florals, and plum. Like all prized coffees, it’s truly expressive, and you can also find notes of peach, lemon, and jasmine. It’s a shining example of the best Yirgacheffe (Gedeo Zone) coffees Ethiopia has to offer.

Bedhatu Jibicho began working in coffee in the 1960s. Although the government gave her husband land, Bedhatu herself has been managing the farm for over five decades. She and her family have invested in the local community by creating more localized cherry collection sites to reduce transportation cost for other producers, and have also contributed to roast construction projects that make travel a little easier for everyone. She’s well into her 80s now, and while her adult children are taking part and continuing the family business, she has no intention to stop working anytime soon.

We buy Bedhatu’s coffee every year not only because it’s delicious, but we want to continue supporting women producers who do good work in their community. We hope you enjoy this coffee as much as we do!
