Fruity, Floral, and Refreshing: Ethiopia Niguse Nara Bombe
Up until recent changes to export laws in Ethiopia, all coffees in Ethiopia need to be sold through the Ethiopia Commodity Exchanges (ECX). While coffee producers are now able to market their coffee directly, few have access to capital to make this happen. In this situation, importers can play a crucial role in helping farmers gain access to international markets. Our latest coffee offering comes through Falcon Coffee Importers. They worked with a small group of farmers in the Sidamo Region of Ethiopia and pre-financed their coffees. All of the farmers have their own export licenses, and their elected group leader, Buriso Amaje, coordinated the milling and export of the coffee alongside the Falcon team in Addis.
All of the farmers in this group have between 3 to 12 hectares, including Niguse Nara, the producer of our latest coffee offering. Niguse has ten hectares of coffee across three different parcels of land in the Huro Hibiro Village, located in the Bombe Mountains of Bensa, Sidama. He produces only natural coffees, all of which is processed and dried at his family home. The two coffee varieties he grows, 74158 and 74160 from the Jimma Agriculture Research Center, were selected from wild plants in the Metu-Bishari Forest in the Illuababora zone in Western Ethiopia. They are popular varieties for a few reasons: they’re high-yielding, resistant to coffee berry disease, and have pronounced citrus and floral notes. Niguse’s coffee is juicy and refreshing, shining with notes of blueberry, blood orange, and honeysuckle!
