The Horizon Supreme washing station was purchased in 2018 by Fidele Ndagijimana. Built in 2006, the mill became dormant for many years after the original owner was unsuccessful in managing its operations. Locals were wary of Fidele as an outsider, but he soon earned their support and trust. Using his experience in managing washing stations in Western Rwanda, he was able to upgrade machinery and implement protocols that allowed Horizon to produce high-quality coffees. The station has become a positive addition to the community: it employs over ninety locals, four of which are full-time, and seventy percent of staff are women. Most coffee growers in Rwanda are smallholder farmers, and 1200 farmers within 2km of the site contribute their cherries to the station.
Rwanda historically produces washed coffees, but natural processed coffees are gaining traction. This one is our first natural selection from Rwanda and has lovely, delicate notes of berries and dried fruit. We taste strawberry, limeade, and golden raisin.
